A Paper presented by the State Chairman of Anambra state chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria on Monday,11th day of January,2016
At the inauguration of the Southeast Division of Nigeria Youth Patriots, Umuahia.
Titled-Youths Inclusion in Governance: The Need for a Law.
PROTOCOLS
Our generation talks about youths inclusion in Nigerian governance with no visible action to back it. Funny,we often cite the 60s and 70s when the likes of Gen Yakubu Gowon, Ojukwu, Obasanjo amongst others were the top brass of our Nation and were in their youth, but we forget that they were not given any chance ,they created, seized and are managing it till date.
Zik, Awolowo, Akintola and so on that fought for our independence and chased away the whites becoming our heroes of the past, took the reigns of governance and managed closely till their younger generation especially in the military saw that their only way to power was through coup, they explored and maximised the channel.
Regrettably, our age have taken to behave like African women who see women inclusion in power as getting the male counterpart to consider them by going soft or even stepping aside which is in sharp contrast with the acceptable practice in most free worlds.
In the western world a woman wants to be judged by her performance not by gender, she asks to be measured by the same yardstick and frowns at unnecessary favoritism but here the reverse is the case. A woman expects a job based on gender,on getting the job, requests to be cut some slack because of the same gender, still, demands promotion before her more performing male counterparts, that's women empowerment here in Africa.
We should get ourselves to the corridors of power by the force of law. In a democratic dispensation only that can open up the door of youth inclusion in governance not our perpetual servitude to the present ruling class.
Our youth bodies will have better strength and discipline if the members learn the scared art of tolerance. No two persons are same,so,without accommodation we cannot come together actualise the process that will see to our betterment.
I salute the current leadership of the National Youth Council of Nigeria under the guidance of comrade Barr Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, whose quest for youth inclusion in governance is enviably unequalled. I call on us all to support him especially those who have seen with the Dasukigate Scandal, that there are no religious, ethnic or political party differences to our older generation when they want to share our common wealth.
May the Heaven which has granted us the Grace to listen, give us the clarity of mind to understand and remember,so that our children and the generations to come will hear and read of us and our time.
God bless you all for Anambra youths
His youthfulness,
Comr Frank Maduka jp
